What
is it?
Neuro - Everything you experience
of the world is received and
processed through your five senses.
Linguistic - You use language and non-verbal communication systems to code, order and make sense of the neural representations of what you have experienced through your sense.
Programming - You have the ability to organise your communication and neurological systems in order to achieve specific desired goals and results.
Why?
You can delete and alter 'files' in the brain that no longer serve you in manifesting
your ultimate destiny.
What
is it ideal for?
Goals
Dreams
Aspirations
Deleting past emotional trauma
Phobias
Allergies
Limitations
What
is N.L.P. (Neuro Linguistic Programming)?
Within the field of psychology, there are dozens of modalities, theories
of personality, which attempt to define and apply some semblance
of order to individual
behaviour. Theories of personality assume that there is such a thing as a generalized "healthy" human
ideal that we are all supposed to be.
One problem with the various personality theories in psychology today is that each is inherently biased toward an ideal that shares basic criteria for "healthy" with the inventor of the theory. In other words, the theoretician assumes that everyone would benefit by becoming their standard or vision of the "healthy" human: i.e. ideal within their model of the world.
NLP on the other hand, aspires to describe the nature of the unique subjective realities of every individual, both quantitatively and qualitatively. It could well be that this approach makes it not only the most useful and accurate but the most respective way we have of addressing the true "human potential" of every individual.
NLP is unique in having proven technique to tell us not only what to be, but how to get there!
NLP is a technology that acknowledges and values the incredible variety and differences that make up human expression, while providing a way to simply and efficiently understand, organise and utilise that variety to help us tap into our true potential.
The
meaning of the communication is the response you elicit
In any interaction meaning is always being given to all aspects of
the communication. What we intend to communicate is not the same
as the response our communication
elicits. The meaning of our communication is whatever we get back as a result
of what we put out. This places the responsibility upon each of us to vary
our communication until we get the response we intend, until their meaning
matches our intention. We call that UNDERSTANDING.
For example: if you want to show caring and interest by asking after someone's well-being and they experience you as being nosey and intrusive, the meaning given by the communication is that you are being nosey and intrusive. If you want a different meaning given to the communication you must do something different, you must alter the communication. Being an effective communicator requires both the willingness and the ability to adjust our behaviour.
People
have all the resources they need to make the changes they want
Since we have been creating our reality all this time taking responsibility
for it and understanding it becomes the foundation for taking charge of our
life. We have access to rich internal resources, strategies and skills. Now
we simply need to remove the limitations that have kept us from consciously
accessing all our resources and creating the life experiences we want.
Focus:
Outcome vs Problem
Focusing on WHAT WE WANT is more useful
than focusing on what WE DON'T WANT. Our
focus determines the direction we will go, where our energy and resources will
be spent. Focus and direction are everything in life. Many of us focus much
of our attention on what is wrong and wonder why we stay stuck. Focusing on
what we want is the first step to having what we want.
Failure
vs Feedback
There is no such thing as failure, only feedback. All experience provides the
opportunity for gaining wisdom. All information that comes to us can be utilized
to adjust our behaviour toward our outcomes. It is only when we label and judge
rather than understand and use experience that we short circuit opportunities
for success.
Behaviour always gets results of some kind if our behaviours get the results we want we have learned what works. If we don't get the results we wanted we have learned what doesn't work for that outcome. We learn from experience. This is what enables us to adjust our behaviour in the direction of success.
There
is no such thing as failure, only experience that helps us stay on
the path of success!
Learning from experience is the key to personal evolution.
Judgement stops our evolution.
Opportunity
vs Limitation
Looking for the opportunity in every situation is usually more useful than
looking for what is wrong in the situation. Looking for the opportunities within
limitations and turning limitations into assets is behaviour worth cultivating.
How
vs Why?
Asking How? is useful in that it naturally
leads to breaking the process down into manageable chunks, making accomplishment
of our goals realistic.
Why? usually prompts rationalisation - excuses for why things are the way they are. This tends to create a state of inertia with little inclination to act. We stay stuck with Why - How creates movement towards what we want.
IF
it's possible in the world, it's possible for me. It's only a matter
of how.
HOW is what takes us from wanting to accomplishing.
NLP is
about how to do, have, and be whatever we want!
Note: Your thoughts create a direct
physical effect on your body! Anger and resentment poison the physical
body - "stress" is a function of how you interpret and focus
on events as well as the result of unresourceful eating and sleeping patterns.
Stress and fear will lead to a depressed immune system and result in ill
health and disease!
What
people experience
... and how they process and give meaning to that experience, determines their
behaviour (their response to the people and events in their lives). Therefore,
if we want to facilitate change in someone, it is important to know how he
or she makes sense of his or her experience. Changing and fine-tuning that
process will result in the desired behavioural shifts.
We can never know all that goes on inside another person, but NLP has identified some key pieces to the puzzle and has developed techniques for gathering reliable information regarding that internal process.
What to notice about NON-VERBAL MESSAGES
Present in all communication
Means different things to different people
May be intentional or unintentional
Provide information about the sender
May contradict verbal message
May outweigh verbal message
Depend upon the total environment
May have positive or negative effects
Behavioural Flexibility
Behaviour is all the things we do internally as well as what we do with our
body that can be seen, heard, felt, smelled and tasted. External behaviour
happens only in the moment and is the natural outcome of the internal behaviours.
External behaviour can only occur in the PRESENT. Internal behaviour can occur in all time frames - past, present and future. Because of them, all we have been and can imagine being is available to us to expand our behavioural choices at any point in time.
