The application of essential oils to maintain or restore physical, mental and emotional health and vitality.
Each
concentrated oil has its own unique healing properties and fragrance.
3 to 4 oils are used, blended together in a unique combination
for each individual and massaged onto the body. Oils are absorbed into
the body
through the skin and the inhalation of the aroma.
What
is it ideal for?
... has its roots in the most ancient healing practices of mankind. Although
it took a French chemist in the 20th century to define it, the practice itself
has been in existence for thousands of years.
Archaeology, and later written histories, proves that from early times, the
medicinal qualities of certain aromatic plants were recognised. There is also
proof that their various 'aromas' were used to create a general sense of well-being.
In the West, it was only the dawn of the new science of chemistry in the seventeenth
century that led to the use of chemical substances in medicine. Plant healing
although never totally abandoned, (for example the discoveries of quinine and
morphine in the 18th and 19th centuries) began to be dismissed as old fashioned
and was gradually supplanted by synthetic drugs especially in the second half
of the 20th century. Unfortunately, these drugs have not always been successful.
This, added to concerns about big business involvement in the pharmaceutical
industry, has led to a renewed interest in the use of plants and plant products
in a more holistic and natural form.
Essential
oils,... the tools of aromatherapy, are extracted from a wide variety of plants and are very concentrated. Each oil has its own unique healing properties and fragrance, and in a treatment, several oils are often used in combination to promote healing. They should therefore never be used without first consulting expert advice.
To a properly trained holistic aromatherapist, the treatment goes beyond the mere application of essential oils. She will endeavour to help the whole person in restoring and/or maintaining optimum health, considering the physical, mental and emotional state of her client.
... and the combination of oils is unique to the person
being treated.
The oils can be applied in a variety of pleasant ways. They
can be absorbed through the skin by massage, bathing or
applying a
compress or skin preparation.
They can also be inhaled (but never taken orally). The aroma alone
can have a real effect on the mind, and via the mind the
body.
Aromatherapy does not dismiss the great scientific advances of the last few centuries; neither does it advocate the rejection of conventional medicine in a client's treatment. Although still classed as an alternative treatment in the UK it is rapidly gaining the support of doctors internationally and can be used to compliment many other forms of treatment both orthodox and unorthodox.
